The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

It is absolutely FREEZING. What is up with this weather? It definately was not THIS COLD last year... Last year on Veteran's Day, it was not bordering on snowing weather! It is insane. I was to go away to a college in California or Florida, just to escape the coldness. Long Island just should not be this cold.

Anyways, I have no life during this week because it is finally Tech Week (aka Hell Week). Our In-School is on Wednesday and the Opening is on Thursday. However, this may mean that I will have to completely b.s. through some of my assignments. At least after this week, everything's going to be over. No wait, I lied, there's always All-County, and then the musical after that. I don't even plan on using music after high school. Yet my schedule is always filled with activities for the music/theatre department. WTH.

SAT prep classes in the morning are killer... I feel like I completely forgot how to do the English section! But I got a perfect score on the first math section I took, so I am fairly happy. I just hope my awesome English grammar skills will improve in time...

The good things is that with the PSAT's and the SAT language tests over, I do not have to worry about another test until the March SAT's! Awesome.... Well, there's midterms, but whatever. No one counts them. I don't, at least. I am a bit worried about AP Bio since we're not learning anything right now. But whatever, it's a school test. It's not IMPORTANT... like the standarized national tests!

Important dates:
Worst '07- 11/14~16
English Synthesis Essay- End of November (gotta hop on that....)
Winter Concert- 12/something.... whatEVER.
Winter Retreat- 12/27~29
All county- 1/8~12 or 16~19... hmmm....
Midterms- End of January

Too... much... work

I'm pretty much convinced that my math professor is
a. on drugs
b. was on drugs recently
or
c. did seriously hard-core partying during the 70's
None of my assignments so far made any sense. This one actually seemed like it was making sense in the beginning, but turned weird. What's weirder is that I actually got a 100 on the last assignment and I'm not sure what I did right.

FUN.

Physics is really hard to do if you don't have a calculator. I miss my TI-83. It had absolutely nothing in it, but I still miss it. I'm gonna ask my teacher if I can use the school's calculator because, technically, I lost it in his class. Plus I don't think I have the time to go out and buy one before the PSAT's (gulp) this Saturday.

FUN.

U.S..... god, U.S. history. Does anything get interesting in between the Revolution and the Civil War?

FUN.

The Scarlet Letter was atrocious the first time and unbearable the second time around. Doing it in school sucks even more because you actually have to read in to Nathaniel Hawthorne's language even though he was just another white guy who had a big case of "i'm-so-supreme-i-understand-more-than-you-do".

FUN.

Back Alley Tech Rehearsal Tomorrow. Enough Said.

FUN.

*sigh*... At least I have the bazaar to look forward to. I'll stuff myself with food to forget my worries.

Yes, we set water on fire.

Homecoming pictures (?) -mostly me asking julia to play around with my DiCa settings so it's better, like her's.

Since it's just a picture of the back of everyone's head, I don't think anyone's gonna come stalk one of us.... but just in case, I'm sorry....

I don't really use this

BUT. I don't wanna do my apush hw, so I'm gonna post something....
Hm, I guess I can put up random pics from my trip.

I had some chocolate non-caffenated concoction of some sort in a Dunkin Donuts, after being drenched in the intermitten rain (sonagi) after coming out of the glasses store and taking a walk through Jagalchi. It was good. I was horrified at the price of the drink, however, even though it pretty much cost the same in the U.S., probably. I was just expecting the dirt-cheap prices that used to be there when I left Korea. Damn IMF and exchange rates, you screwed me over again!

The b-e-a-utiful island of Namhae, where I stayed at this really ugly but interesting sports hotel. My dad's friend owned a house here, so we went to a lot of restaurants, got a decent tour, and I got to see a seafood auction, even though the weather was bad. Also, I saw this art gallery place and we passed by places where, according to the taxi driver who drove us around, "Fantasy Couple", a popular Korean drama, was filmed.

At the art gallery's gift shop, I found this lovely coconut piggy bank! It's the year of the pig, so a lot of pig-themed souveniers were being sold. I wanted to buy one- it wasn't even that expensive!- but I was afraid that it was gonna break between all the luggage, so I couldn't. I still can't let go. Piggy~

Finally, because I'm too damn lazy, this is a picture I took when I went to Koba BBQ (I think?) when I visited my cousin in Seoul. They were really pushing the tortillas on us. The tortilla wasn't big enough and it wasn't the best I've tasted, but it was good enough. The salsa was much like pickled radish from jjajangmyun-jib and added no heat. However, I found that the grilled beef, a spoon of the faux-salsa, and a piece of kimchi made the right combination! Yay~ The warm chewy tortilla and the crunchy spicy kimchi- who knew it would make such a great taste?

CYworld -_-

Cyworld sucks.

The message boards are loaded with stupid self-obsessive people who write mean stuff to attract other people's attention so that people will visit their hompy.

My password keeps getting screwed up. I tried to find my password through e-mail, but cy isn't sending it to me.

This entire month feels like a parade of technological errors.

BS.
BS, BC!!!!!!

SingShot Sucks.

So today, I stumbled on to this "very cool" website called SingShot, which is basically like karaoke combined with Soundclick. Apparently, it used to be a site where you had to pay. However, they released a new beta version so it's free as long as you register. As my karaoke obsession has not dwindled from Andrew singing "Move Along" non-stop on SingStar, of course I registered right away.

The site has a decent amount of songs. There's not many recent songs, of course, but most karaoke favorites are on there. It's actually not bad for a free site.

But oh. My. God! I know the website is beta testing- but it's so slow! And you pretty much encounter a server failure notice half the time you click on something. It's very frustrating.

Plus, sometimes my microphone is not in sync with the website. It's really annoying when my voice comes out 4 seconds too late. Despite the fact I've been on for hours, I have yet to record one song because of these errors.

It's been hailed as the YouTube of online karaokes, the next hot site.

In my opinion?

Not until they fix those bugs.

My Precious 5-day Weekend

Mwahahaha... Korea for Summer '07 plan is pretty much definite! I'm gonna be in Korea from o8*o8 til o8*28, I think.

This is how my precious 5-day Memorial Day Weekend went.
1. Practice
2. More practice
3. Practice, practice, practice!

And still, no sign of looking for that summer job.

But yesterday, we did buy a cake from Coldstone, so properly named "A Cheesecake Called Desire" (Eheh, cute name... except Tennessee Williams is not generally spoken of in my household, so no one laughed when I went "Stella... Stella!")

It had a really sweet plain vanilla cake with cheesecake flavoured ice cream, raspberry sauce, and raspberry cream. The raspberry was really good! The cake was frozen solid because the guy at the store bought it out in a hurry and it didn't melt at all during the 5 minute car ride in the nicely air-conditioned car. We sliced one piece 3 knives later, so we decided to let it melt. (I suggested it as soon as we opened the top, but whatever...)

So my mother kept one of the knives stuck in there, as a symbol for our futile attempts to fight against the forces of nature...
Andrew started digging in to the one piece we freed with a spoon and a fork in each hand. He used the fork to keep the cake down on the paper plate while he scooped with the spoon. Oh, my genius baby! But at the end he decided to eat using both. I took a video, of course. It'll be up on youtube later.

So today, after Daniel came back from the Memorial Day Parade, sweaty and hungry from the marching, we made personal pizzas with all the stuff we have around the house. The theme for my pizza today was "Yellow". I mixed the tomato sauce with a little bit of curry, used sweet potatoe underneath the cheese, and added yellow paprika and pineapples for topping. As I predicted, it was a little bit too sweet, but I ate 3/4 of it anyway. It did get really sickening in the end.

Hitting Tanger Mall tomorrow with my mom, unless the rain promised by so many weathermen happens to come tomorrow.

Fried Rice

My two freshmen lovelies came to my house yesterday after school. We started making fried rice because we were hungry, but they had to leave before it was done (>< )
Well, I ate it all by myself...
We chopped up green pepper, onion, and carrots, which we found lying around the fridge, and fried it. Then I cut the turkey cold cut in to smaller pieces and added that. I mixed this with rice, and then added egg in to the pan with some teriyaki sauce and oyster sauce. Finally, this was all topped with Smelt Roe (read, fish eggs) drowned in sesame oil. Yum!
Smelt roe is great. I wish I can stock up on them, but they don't stay fresh for a long time, and if I freeze them, it takes such an effort to defrost them.

After Watching "Invisible Children"...

Summary of “Invisible Children”

The largest group victimized by the fighting in Uganda is children- children who are killed, children who live in fear of dying, and children who are trained to kill. No written records exist of how many Ugandan children were abducted by the LRA, or the Lord’s Resistance Army, and then trained in the bushes to become desensitized killing machines.

The LRA are rebels, currently led by Joseph Kony, who are fighting to overthrow the current Ugandan government. However, many Ugandans became tired of fighting and were not inclined to join the rebels. Desperate for more soldiers, the LRA abducts children in the middle of the night and brutalize them to the point where they lose all feelings of morals. Children from age 5 to 12 are big enough to carry weapons and brutally kill, but they are also small enough to enter buildings and capture more children. They are also young enough to brainwash and especially with the spread of the AIDS epidemics, it is easy to find orphaned children in many villages.

These children are taught to kill with guns, knives, and other weapons, and they are forced to kill any and every person who is not with the LRA- including children like themselves.

In fear of abduction, children in Uganda flee every night to major towns and crowd in hospitals, bus parking lots, schools, and even under verandas to avoid capture by the LRA. This rebellion, which started in 1987, held Uganda in a state of constant fear, movement, and malnourishment. The LRA’s goal, as one Ugandan put it, is to “bring peace to the Acholi (majority of the people who are in Northern Uganda, the area most terrorized) by killing Acholi”.

Conditions are so harsh on some Ugandans that now they are beginning to think that even death might be better than the life they are living.

Many Ugandans believe that if the United States, the current superpower in the world, strongly pressures the Ugandan government to do more things to put down the rebellion and provide enough aid and defense to Uganda, the LRA insurgency may be put down in a short amount of time.

Reaction

It’s always heartbreaking to see innocent children caught in the atrocities and violence of war.

However, the situation in Uganda was especially disturbing because this time, the children are not only being killed but they are being kidnapped and brutally trained to be no longer a human, but a little killing machine. Even if all this fighting ends tomorrow, nothing can compensate the psychological horrors that will forever haunt all Ugandans who have witnessed this violence.

It is appalling to think that after so many tragedies in history, such as the Holocaust, it is still possible for any nation to stand by and watch this unravel, but these atrocities are not uncommon in developing areas, such as parts of Africa. The nations with power will not take enough actions to stop this, and they say “It doesn’t affect us” or “It’s just Africa”.

And in a world where such horrors are possible, it seems that only the innocent children weep.

I Love Coldstone <3

So, a while ago, for no reason, I decided to sign up for Coldstone Creamery newsletters.

Today, when I opened up my e-mail, I saw an e-mail from them. They sent me a coupon for a free Love It for my birthday, and I can redeem it within the next two weeks!

I love free stuff. Don't you?

Slaving away at the term paper... I don't see why it's "interdisciplinary" at all. I doubt my wonderful AP Global textbook has even more than a page that covers the Holocaust. Our district should be more attentive to the students' curriculum when assigning things like this. I would have preferred the Julius Caesar one that they had last year.

Planning My Possible Trip to Korea

It's possible!!! I want to plan some things out. I'm assuming the trip will be for two weeks, though. I can't imagine squeezing all the stuff I want to do in one week.
1. Visit all my relatives. That's like one on my dad's side and 15 on my mom's side -_-
2. Go back to all the places I've lived in. Whoa, that's a lot.
3. Eat. food.
4. Go to a noraebang, which will cost me $7 per hour instead of the $20 they charge around here.
5. Buy acorns for cyworld.
6. Visit Seoul, which I have not even come in proximity of in the total of 10 years I lived in Korea.
7. Go to a concert!
8. Buy CD's and clothes, and DVD's and books...
9. Go to Haewoondae
10. Duty-free Shops!!! I want to go inside one, basically.

Quiz Bowl

We probably placed really, REALLY low... In the first game, we came pretty close to winning. In the second game, which I decided to sit out on, we lost miserably. I think we lost by more than 100 pts. The last game, we won against a team of two. Big whoop.

Every time I go to another school, I am reminded once again to be grateful for the less hectic, less crowded, and less complicated hallways of our school. I also feel a need to get away from testosterone, as the team is all male (except me) and other teams usually end up having occasional one or two.

New song on my playlist- Yummy~ Gwen Stefani

I'd totally quit if I didn't love trivia.
